Orkney returned from WWII and purchased a consignment of 2,000 army surplus sleeping bags and sold at a modest profit from the back of his station wagon in Portland, Oregon. Soon, name brand sports and automotive products became the store's primary offerings. Orkney passed away in 1976, just prior to the chain's expansion in Oregon and Washington.
